Rome Total War is a rts game in which at the start of the game you are only allowed to be 3 factions, 3 Roman houses, the House of Scipii (blue) the house of Julii (red) and the house of Brutii (green) Each of these factions start with a few cities in Italy, and it doesn't really matter what Roman faction you are, but they may build different temples with different bonuses, for example the house of Brutii can build a temple to Mars, and the benefit is that troops trained at the city with the temple have increased experience, which makes it harder for the enemy to cause them to flee! very helpful.
As you progress, you take over enemy land and destroy enemy factions, you may make peace with them, and set up trade routes with them.
Later on, you may get enough public support to wage war with your Roman allies and the senate, who until you wage war with them, give you senate missions to do. the Senate is situated in Rome and that is the only city they'll ever have.
Also, you may decided to start more games with new un-locked factions, such as Britons, and Greeks.
